Cold sparks, dry ice fog and uplighting: a guide to wedding effects

By The Divinity DJs team · · 5 min read

Uplighting sets the mood for the whole evening, beams and lasers bring energy to the dance floor, dry ice fog creates a low cloud for the first dance, and cold spark fountains add fireworks-style drama to entrances and exits. Most effects work best when they are timed to a specific moment.

Uplighting: the foundation

Uplights wash walls and architecture in colour, usually from the start of the reception to the end of the night. They can match your wedding palette and highlight the head table and dance floor. The number you need depends on your venue’s size and layout.

Dry ice fog: dancing on the clouds

A dry ice fog machine produces a low-lying fog that hugs the floor. Each effect typically lasts a few minutes, depending on the amount of dry ice and the venue’s ventilation, so it’s best saved for the first dance or grand entrance.

Cold sparks: fireworks, indoors

Cold spark fountains are designed for indoor use, with minimal smoke and no odour. Each unit has about 15 minutes of fuel that can be split across moments like the entrance, first dance, cake cutting and farewell. We recommend 2 to 4 units, rented in pairs, with a technician running them.

Beams and lasers: dance floor energy

Moving beams and lasers change the room the moment the dance floor opens. They also add drama to entrances and exits.

Questions to ask your venue

  • Are cold spark fountains or fog effects permitted, and are there any conditions?
  • Where can lighting fixtures be placed, and is there power nearby?
  • What time can the production team load in and set up?
  • Are there ceiling height or smoke detector considerations?
